Survival assignment - Part 2 Inuit activities

As I am trying to get students to think more effectively I have graded the activities under each intelligence.

1. The highest result is acceptable as this involves only telling me what you know and understand from basic research.

2. The highest result is good as you will be applying knowledge from  your  research into making something relating to the Inuit lifestyle.

3. This involves the highest level of thinking and therefore exemplary is the top result.  You will need to work in groups for most of these activities and show how what you have learnt about the Inuits can be used in other ways.

Students  must complete at least three activities.

Space and vision smart

1. Make a collage, model, mural, diorama or display about hunting with the Inuit people.

2. Make a mobile or pop-up book suitable for a young Inuit child to use.     OR     Have a go at three jigsaws (See Miss Wyatt)

3. In a group of 3, make a board or card game about Inuits.  It should show your knowledge about Inuit culture and lifestyle.

Music smart

1. Make a list of sounds heard in one season by an Inuit.

2. Make and record sound effects representing a season in an Inuit’s life.

3. In a group of 3, create and record a rap song that would be suitable as entertainment in the igloo.  Must include background effects and movement.

Word smart

1. Design a ‘hardware catalogue’ advertising Inuit tools (male and female).  Remember to play up the ones you think are important and describe special features of the tools.

2. Design a holiday brochure advertising an Inuit holiday eg Inuit Getaway.  Think about .. Accommodation, season, food, things to do, what to wear and so on.  OR   Design a menu including at least three courses for a restaurant catering to traditional Inuits.

3. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) wants caribou hunting banned.  In a group of 2, prepare a case for and against this proposal.

People smart

1. Describe behaviour of Inuit children.

2. Predict how a traditional Inuit teenager would cope if living with your family for a week.

3. In a group of 3, write and perform a 5-10  minute Inuit news program.  Could include music, weather, pictures  and so on.

Logic and math smart

1. Design a storyboard to show how Inuits catch fish or hunt caribou or seal.

2. Conduct a survey relating to one aspect of Inuit life.  Tally and graph results and write 5 questions that could be asked about your graph.

3. You can introduce one western lifestyle to the Inuit people.  What would it be and what impact would it have on the Inuits?  Present in an imaginative way.

Body smart

1. Act out how to set up for catching the seal.

2. With a partner, play some Inuit games used for entertainment in the igloo.  OR             In a group of 4, mime how Inuits catch fish or hunt other animals.

3. In a group of 3, make a puppet show about Inuit life. Perform at an assembly.    OR    Create a series of dances or body movements that could be done inside an igloo for exercise during the winter months.

Self smart

1. List 10 things an Inuit would NEVER do.

2. How are you different to/like an Inuit child?

3. You have been invited to spend time visiting a traditional Inuit family as a home-stay guest.  How will you cope and why?

Nature smart

1. Draw three animals used by Inuit for food.

2. How do Inuit use all parts of the animals they hunt? Create a guide to Inuit hunting.

3. Why is it important to be in harmony with nature for the Inuit people? Compare that to your beliefs.

  1. Hi Sue.
I like the way you have clearly linked your expectations to achievement. You have included a variety of interesting activities which will link to variety of ICTs. Using Multiple Intelligences gives your students scope to work in their strengths. What is the timeframe for this? If the students were going for 3s in each SMART they may require more time. Can’t wait to see the results up in your site. keep us informed.
    Cheers
