What do you eat?

I have just visited a very interesting website from Time magazine.  It has a slideshow showing what fifteen families around the world eat in a week.  Which family best represents your family and why?  Compare the costs per person rather than per family.  Why do some families have mainly fruit and vegetables with a grain like rice or maize?  What is the difference between food eaten in developed countries like Germany and USA and Great Britain and those from less developed countries like Chad, Mexico and Ecuador? Create a graph using some aspect of these photos. Research two of the countries and compare developed/less developed.  This website might have some interesting facts about the two countries you chose. How up to date is the information?

Hi from Jacksonville, Florida, USA. I am so happy you added us (Tech Explorers) to your blogroll. I am the teacher, Mrs. Hernandez. My students are mostly 4th and 5th graders and one third grader. I know they will be so excited to see that they had a visitor from the other side of the world! Please have your students visit our blogs and comment. Our Tech Explorers group is an afterschool group that meets every Monday. We will be visiting your students’ blogs this Monday and will leave some comments for you, too. Look forward to learning more about you and about Tasmania!

    Dear Miss W & class,

Warm regards from the state of Kansas in the USA.You have a wonderful thing happening in your class, when you can so easily interact with people around the world. I think it is so exciting to think what the future holds for young people.

When I saw your blog and this post about foods we eat, I knew that I had to comment for several reason. I was a sailor in the US Navy, and my visit to Hobart, Tasmania on the USS Missouri in 1991 was one of my most memorable experiences of my life. I dream of the day I can afford to return for another visit. I met some wonderfully friendly people during my short visit there and was able to explore a great deal in only four days. I even managed to take a trip to the Great Lake and catch a beautiful lake trout for dinner-Yum! So there’s one food I like. It was April, and I recall it was quite chilly on that fishing trip to the highlands of Tasmania. I plan to do a little fishing again soon, although it is still cool here right now. We are looking forward to warm springtime very soon.

Another reason I wanted to comment on the food post is that when I am not teaching my computer classes at Kansas State University, I am helping my wife operate her home-based business, Wendy’s Party Treats. You can see what that is all about at http://www.wendyspartytreats.com. Right now it is mostly about snacks and dessert foods, but we are discussing adding more healthy foods to eat. At least you can see what Americans in Kansas like to have to eat at a party.

Well that is all for now. If you are interested, and would like to learn more about the Battleship Missouri, or anything I can tell you about where I live for that matter, drop me an e-mail at billgx@ksu.edu.

Have fun and learn a lot!

    Hi Miss W,
I had a look at all the photos of families and what food they eat.
Some families spend twice as much as what my family spends on food!
I wouldn’t like to eat what some of the families eat.
I don’t think any of these families would represent my family!
But it’s good to know what other families around the world eat!

Did anyone notice how many families included soft drinks / soda pop in their weekly foods? I’m curious what the favorite drinks are in your class? Do you drink a lot of soft drinks in Australia? What do you call a drink like Coca-cola where you live? Around here, a lot of people call it “pop” but when I was in the Navy with a lot of people from different parts of America, I learned that more people call it “soda” than “pop”.

My kids drink a lot of water, milk and juice. We try to limit how much soda pop they drink. My favorite drink is simply water, but I enjoy a cup of coffee now and then. I do not drink much soda, but my wife loves it! I don’t think that soda pop is good for you, and it’s expensive too!

We take things for granted to much and while we are stuffing our faces, others are dying of hunger.

I think some of the food other familys eat look kind of weird. But some people might think of them as a treat.
I still can’t understand how they can live on less than $2.00 a week.

    To Miss W
That is a really good website for people to learn about how much people eat and how lucky we are. The JApanese, American and Germans had the most money a week and Chad Nigeria Egypt and Ecudor have the least.

But they might not want money.
Like a little story my dad told me. The Americans gave some crops and a tractor but the people didn’t want tractor. They planted all the crops with the tractor. But that night they all blow away. The people wanted a truck to get some rocks from the mountain. So they planted the crops and put the rocks around the crops so the wind counldn’t get to them and the crops turned into a great corn feild and there was enough for every one.

    Hi,
It’s really interesting to see that many families live on only $1.28 per week, we are so rich looking at some of these families. The most expensive family is the Revis family of North Carolina with $341.98 each week!

Our family is mostly like the The Al Haggan family of Kuwait City, we eat mostly fruit vegetables meat and salad.

It’s interesting to see that most families buy bulk, while other families can not even afford to buy or recieve enough food to survive.
