The Great Arctic Hunter

Now that we have begun our work on the traditional and modern Inuit people, I thought I would include some good websites you could visit to find out informaiton on this group of people in Northern Canada, Greenland and Alaska.  I showed you “The Great Arctic Hunter” in class, but here are a few more.

Journey to Kitigaaryuk” follow Jack and his Inuit pen pal Roy to an old Inuit village.  You need a flash player for these two journeys to work.

Roy meets his cousin Kubla on a journey into the past of the Copper Inuit at Angulalik.

Online exhibits relating to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Not all exhibits relate to Inuit people.

A set of photos from Flickr – these are public but pages on other web sites including blogs that display images hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo back to its photo page on Flickr.  This also means if using a photo in a slideshow presentation you must have that link or put the information in a bibliography. Check with me if you don’t know how to source a photo.

While reading, playing or looking at these websites, make sure you take notes about the seasons and what happens in each of them as well as the roles of men, women and children.  You will need your notes for the activities later in the term.

What do you eat?

I have just visited a very interesting website from Time magazine.  It has a slideshow showing what fifteen families around the world eat in a week.  Which family best represents your family and why?  Compare the costs per person rather than per family.  Why do some families have mainly fruit and vegetables with a grain like rice or maize?  What is the difference between food eaten in developed countries like Germany and USA and Great Britain and those from less developed countries like Chad, Mexico and Ecuador? Create a graph using some aspect of these photos. Research two of the countries and compare developed/less developed.  This website might have some interesting facts about the two countries you chose. How up to date is the information?

Create your own avatar

As you are not allowed to use a picture of yourself on our blogs, perhaps you would like to create a picture to represent you.  I was reading another teacher’s blog and found out about this site.  Have a go!!  I have made one and hope to work out how to include it in my blogs from now on. Save it as a jpeg or gif file in your own folder on the server under My Pictures.  Call it your name with ava after it.  I might then be able to create a post about our class with the avatars instead of photos.  eg lisaava, chocava, dottiava or pinaava.  Whenever a post written by you is included on our class blog, then I will add your avatar so people know what you think represents you.

Happy Easter

I’m sorry I haven’t been at school the last couple of days.  I think I caught those sniffles that a few of you have had this last week.  As I won’t be there to wish you a “Happy Easter”, I thought I would include it in a post as many of you will read the blog today or Thursday during computer time.  If Mr Clark or Mr Georgakis want to know how to comment in blogging, please show them during the lesson.  I will probably come to school at the end of the day just to collect my laptop as I plan to spend some of my Easter break writing some lessons for us to use  on the smartboard.

What are your plans for Easter?

Remember to be computer savvy when giving an answer. Remind the teachers what they can and can’t say when blogging.

Beading

Hi my name is Ashleigh and I’m going to tell you about my favourite hobby beading. I have taking a lot of bead courses at Bead Co. and Beadles. Most of them have been with my cousin because she loves beading as much as me.

There are a lot of great things you can do with beads, such as, making earring, necklaces, bookmarks, rings and bead bags. Bead bags are my favourite things to make.

Here are some of the thing you will need to start beading:

  • A selection of bead
  • Bead string
  • Pliers
  • Head pins
  • Eye pins
  • Wire
  • Crimps
  • Earring hooks
  • And lots of creativity

You can get most of this stuff from Spotlight and craft shops.

If you would like to know more on beading please comment on my post. A couple of places where I buy my beading things are linked below.

Being a global citizen

During meet and greet last week, I mentioned some of the ways in which students can become better global citizens.  Some of you have families who already sponsor a child through World Vision.  But what can you do on your own?  You are only one person ……how can your voice be heard?

I was reading McTeach’s blog and was reminded of an event that I took part in last year.  It only took an hour of my time and I didn’t even have to leave home to do it.  It didn’t cost me any money …… in fact I probably saved some.  Finally, it was a way to reduce my “carbon footprint” on this magnificent world of ours.

What is this fantastic event?  It began last year with  Sydney being the only major city in the world which took part.  People in houses, cleaners in buildings and bosses in corporations just had to flick a switch.  This year there are many major cities of the world who have already pledged to participate in this very simple but effective activity.

There has been some information in our local newspapers about this event happening at 8pm on Saturday March 29 in your own local area.

This site has also got a video about it.

Have you guessed?  Will your family take part?  Please comment about this event.

Congratulations!!

Congratulations go to lisa, choc, dotti and pina who have shown Miss W they are prepared to work hard with blogging.  These students have written posts of their own to add to our class blog; have made many sensible and conversational comments on posts I had written or other students had written and had visited blogs form other students and teachers around the world and left comments there.

Over the weekend, these students will have received an email saying how they can log into their own blog.  Next week I will spend some time with these four students in setting up the presentation, blogroll and sidebar widgets on their blogs.

congratulations

Welcome to our new URL!!

As the learnerblogs website is not going to receive any more updates or improvements according to the edublogs admin team, I have decided to import our old blog across to one I can have now until I retire as long as I continue teaching grades 6/7.  Many thanks to those students, teachers and parents who  commented at our old blog, but feel free to comment here  It looks exactly the same, still hasyour comments and posts but has a new URL address.  It will also make it easy for me to make blogs for individual students during term 2.

For those classes and teachers who  included us on your blogroll, please change our URL so new bloggers come to our new blog site.

Goals for this term

Have you ever set any goals for yourself?  Maybe to buy a bike or an iPod – I know my niece is often around at my place to earn money so she can buy something she really wants or to save to go on a skiing holiday on the mainland.

Sometimes though it is hard to actually achieve your goals unless you set some smaller steps to help you gain the big goal.  I have just read Aiden’s goals both personal and learning and he has decided on some steps along the way.  Read some of the other student blogs at Mrs C in Victoria.  Remember to make a comment if you have similar goals.

What would you set as a personal goal and a school goal to try and achieve by the end of term 1?  What steps would help you gain that goal by the end of term 1?
